A call by the head of the Australian Racing Board, Bob Bentley, for the government to pass legislation that would essentially protect the racing industry from competition, has incensed global leading bookmaker, Betfair.
Bentley warned that if the government did not step in and make the necessary changes to the law, the Australian horse racing industry could lose as much as $128 million in revenues.
Andrew Twaits, the Chief Executive Officer for Betfair said: “Mr. Bentley’s call for federal legislation to allow the racing industry to protect the TABs aren’t surprising, given his dual roles as chairman of the ARB and Director of the Tatts Group, which operates the TABs in Queensland and South Australia.”
