1. The amount of the bid

2. The kind of bet

3. The odds on offer

Sportsbooks in the US and Bookmakers in UK are entities that accept sports bets. The bets can be placed predicting the outcome of several sporting events like Baseball, Snooker, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Football, Tennis and hundreds of other sports and atheletic activities. Just to cover some basic definitions: a sportsbook is the one that accepts the sports bet. An oddsmaker is the one who sets the odds of betting.

Betting the Odds
In order to place a bet, you must first select the type of bet and the amount you will wager. This naturally will depend upon the odds that are being offered. Before you go ahead and place the bet, carefully scrutinize the range of available odds.

The odds must be in the ratio of at least 2:1 for the bet to be worthwhile. Another factor that must be taken into account is the amount being given by way of commission to the sports-book. This ideally should be a minimal percentage of the total value of the odds.

Given below is a list of some common kinds of bets:

1. Single or Straight Bet: This is betting in its most basic form and allows you to bet at given odds, upon a winner.

2. Point Spread: Under this bet one can bet on one of two selections that have been equated through the allocation of suitable points. In the Point Spread the number of allocated points are shown with a + sign for the favorable side and a – sign for the underdog. In order that the better wins, the favored team must win by more than the Point Spread. On the flip side, if a bet has been placed on the underdog, that team has to lose by less than the Point Spread for the better to win.

3. Buy Points: This involves moving the Point Spread positively, by paying a price.

4. The Moneyline: This type of bet is simply on who will win. It establishes the odds for each side but is the reverse of the Point Spread, with a – sign standing for the favorite and the + sign for the underdog.

5. Total Bet: This is similar to point spread bets, only in that the better bets on the total points scored.

6. Over/ Under: This is a bet as per which the number of points scored by the teams in any game will be beyond/ over OR below/ under the total set by the oddsmaker.

7. Parlay of Accumulator: This is a way of betting on multiple sporting events in the hope that a big payoff will be made if all win. The picks made are in relation to the point spread. Even if one event does not win or draw, the better loses the entire bet. Huge amounts can be made through parlay betting, in the event of a win.

8. Teaser: A teaser is similar to a parlay, however it has the option of adding or taking off points from one or more than one Spread bets. The odds depend upon the number of points the spread is moved as well as upon the number of teams that are combined to form the teaser.

9. Futures: These are bets on who will win the championship in the event that there are more than two possible teams to bet on. Substantial variations between sportbooks exist in house edge on futures.

10. Buying Half a Point: In this, the straight bet player gets the option of moving the point spread half point to his advantage. The most appropriate time to buy a half point is when one team is favored by 2.5, 3, 6.5 or 7 in football. This is primarily due to the fact that several games end in a 3 or 7 point difference. The extra half point may end up turning a loss to a draw or a draw to a win.

Of all these types of bets, three types of bets are prominent and must be used for the simple reason that they are simple themselves, are easy to win and have a good chance of winning. These are the Straight bet, the Doubles and the Future.

Here are a few Betting tips that will help you to place the Best Bets and push you towards a big win, they are:

1. Always make an intelligent analysis of the odds and the offer of the bet.

2. For a simple bet, stick to the Straight bet as it is non-complicated and has good winning prospects.

3. Bet wisely by keeping your selections limited. Also try to limit the influence of bias in your betting. If you are a fan of a team try to limit the effect of that favoritism when betting.

4. One of the most rewarding bets is the ‘Future’ bet but only if you know a lot about the sport being played and about the players.

5. By betting regularly though systematically and in an analytical manner, one can improve your judgmental ability.

6. Contain the urge to bet with you winnings immediately. If you do not follow the standard rule of 50%, at least put some of your winnings back into your pocket.

7. Make sure your sportsbook is a member of a known Gambling Association, makes a quick payment and is easily accessible. Read in between the lines, about matters pertaining to disputes.

8. Train yourself to look for value odds – you will master this art soon, with time and practice.

This is the most important rule of all. It is a must for horse players and all people involved in gambling. If you are serious about making money gambling you must incorporate a money management system. I define a money management system as a determination of how much money is safely wagered on any given bet. Try to find a money management system that best suits your betting style and bankroll. I will write more about money management in up coming articles.

Rule 2 Do Not Chase

Like Little Orphan Annie said “the sun will come out tomorrow.” How many times have you been down, and found yourself playing a track or race you would not have normally played. What usually happens is that you force plays and lose, only to be down more money. Being able to take losses is a difficult lesson to learn, but one that must be learned if you desire success in gambling. I promise the sun will come out tomorrow and so will the horses.

Rule 3 Stay Away From Sure Things

Let me say this in plain English, there is no such thing as a sure thing. Anything can happen in a race. If you have been around long enough you probably have seen some crazy things happen in races.
Let me tell you my own true story about tips at the race track.

I have been an owner of thoroughbred race horses for about 12 years. That being said, my first time on the backside of the track was to watch my first horse breeze. While I was there my trainer was talking to another trainer about the races that day. The other trainer told us how he loved his horse that was entered to run in a maiden race that afternoon. I quickly marked it on my program and was looking forward to making a sizable bet. Shortly later my trainer and I came across another trainer who told us how he had a great shot in the same maiden race. I quickly marked it and said to myself, this is great I can make an exacta box and really make a score. Later the same morning we came across another trainer and a jockey and believe it or not they both loved their horses in the same maiden race. Now I had four horses out of nine that had a great shot that day. I went to the track that afternoon and I handicapped the race. I found a horse that displayed many of the things I look for when picking a winner in a maiden race. I then decided to key my selection for 1st 2nd and 3rd in trifectas with the four tips I received in the morning. Sure money, so I thought. The result was that my pick won the race and paid $30 and change and only one of the four horses finished better than 4th. From that day on I have been very skeptical of inside tips at the track. There is no easy money at the track. You have to do your work and trust your own picks.

Rule 4 Keep Records

When using a service or your own handicapping selections, it is very important to keep accurate records. Keeping records is the only way to determine if your system works. Be sure to allow a fair amount of time when judging a system or service. I recommend a minimum of 100 bets in order to gauge the reliability of your system. You should keep records wager types and amounts along with profits and losses. You will be amazed to see certain patterns develop. This allows you to focus on your strengths while eliminating your weaknesses. The main reason people do not keep records is that they cannot bear to see all the losses. If you choose not to keep records, you will never learn from your mistakes and are sure to make the same mistakes over and over again.

Rule 5 Look for Value

There are differences of opinion when it comes to the topic of value. I define value as the risk versus the potential reward. Some say that value means not playing a favorite or a horse at 3-1 or less. I do not limit myself to specific odds when determining value. Although I am the last person to look for favorites, there are times when they offer value. Value is determined on a race by race basis. When handicapping races it is a good idea to play lines maker. Handicappers often overlook this idea, but it is useful in uncovering value in a race. I try to find races where a favorite is over bet and vulnerable. Doing this will increase your ROI (return on investment) over the long run.

Rule 6 Do Not Force a Bet

This is a difficult rule for horse handicappers. There are many races in a day and many days in a year. So do not make a bet unless you feel it is a smart one. A serious horse handicapper must have the discipline to pass on races about which he does not have strong opinion. Before you bet, ask yourself, “is it a good bet.” Listen to yourself, there should be not regrets on the wager you make.

Rule 7 Be Flexible on Betting Angles

Successful Handicappers are not a slave to any particular angle. Using only one angle greatly limits your potential profits. It is important to learn and incorporate different angles when handicapping horses. An astute handicapper can determine which angles to apply to a particular race. Speed figures, pace, drop downs, pedigrees etc., are all valuable and should be used in conjunction when looking for a winner.

Rule 8 Be Prepared

The boy scouts preach, “Be prepared.” This seems obvious but the advice is seldom followed. First, look over the card in order to find races with value. These are the races to study further. Sharp handicappers have most of their work done before the track opens. When at the track, get the scratches and determine if it affects your selections. Since you did your home work you will have time to adjust or cancel your play. Doing your work in advance also allows time to view the horses and the tote board before making your bet.

Rule 9 Trust Your Instincts

To be a successful handicapper you must trust your instincts. I personally struggled with this in the beginning of my career. I would handicap the race, circle my picks and then begin to second guess myself. The result was that many more times than not my original picks were winners. It took many losing tickets to learn “think long, think wrong”. Go with your first instincts and trust your skills as a handicapper.

Rule 10 Have the Winner’s Attitude

Although I mention this last it should probably be first on my list. If you go to the track without a winner’s attitude, you have lost before you have begun. In order to win at any type of gambling you must be confident. The one thing all the so called hard luck people have in common is a lack of a winning attitude. If you have a losing attitude your subconscious mind will make losing a reality.

Before the Diamondbacks departed on a 10-game trip, manager Bob Melvin called the excursion to Cincinnati, New York and Atlanta a measuring stick that would give his team an idea of just how good it really is.

After finishing it off with a 7-3 record, topped by a four-game sweep of the Braves at Turner Field, the results are in: Arizona is a pretty good ballclub and just might do a little bit more than hang around at the top of the National League West.

The four-game sweep over the Braves marked just the third time in Diamondbacks history that they have accomplished such a feat on the road. The 7-3 record, meanwhile, ties a club mark for the best trip of a road campaign involving at least 10 games.

The pitching staff posted a 2.35 ERA during the 10 games, allowing 24 earned runs in 92 innings, and in the past three games alone, the offense has delivered 10 home runs. Overall, the Diamondbacks outscored their opponents 56-24.

The Diamondbacks continue to get sterling performances from their starting pitchers, as Sunday’s 9-3 win over the Braves marked the 13th “quality start” from the rotation in the past 15 games. Right-hander Miguel Batista was the latest to work at least six innings and allow three or fewer runs, and during this particular stretch, the starters have fashioned a 1.94 ERA.

Batista, who allowed three earned runs through 6 2/3 innings in improving to 6-2, got help from an offense that pounded out 14 hits and four home runs for the second consecutive day. The Diamondbacks swept the Braves in four games at Turner Field, the first time that’s happened to Atlanta at home or on the road since the Phillies did it to them in 1995.

RHP Brandon Webb needs to pitch 2 2/3 scoreless innings when he starts Monday against the visiting Phillies to establish a Diamondbacks record for pitching consecutive scoreless innings. Webb is on 25 and counting. Andy Benes holds the club mark with 27 1/3 straight scoreless frames during the team’s inaugural season in 1998.

I have been touting Bon & John all spring and like him in an exacter with Steppenwolfer that was named after the 70’s rock band Steppenwolf.

Last night the Dallas Mavericks got subpar scoring games from stars Dirk Nowitzkie and Josh Howard, but Jason Terry lit the Heat up for 32 points. They also got some quality minutes from Eric Dampier to subdue the listless Heat. Once again the fragile foul shooting of NBA players is alarming and how are you going to win when just two players on the team get to the charity stripe. Shooting 36% (7-19) on a skill that you have practiced since kindergarten is perplexing to say the least.

The Edmonton Oilers are in serious trouble down 2-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes and look for the Chris Pronger team to lay a beating on the North Carolina based Canes. This series is far from over and I look for it to go the full seven.

All baseball eyes are on the Chicago Cubs who are floundering and this may result in the dusting of manager Dusty Baker. The Cubs have lost 11 of their last 16 overall, falling 12 1/2 games out of first place. At 23-36, they’ve matched their season low mark of 13 games under .500.

For the Cubs, it was another night of futile at-bats against the Reds Brandon Arroyo and two relievers. Chicago has lost three in a row, getting a total of 15 hits and two runs in those games.

The PGA tour is in Rye, New York for the Barclay Classic a tuneup for the US Open and Tiger Woods is resurfacing. The nine-week layoff is the longest of his career, and Woods said he isn’t sure what to expect out of his game. But having playing 18 holes at Winged Foot on May 27, he knows what to expect from the course.

Lurking down in the lobby are the Toronto Blue Jays who have fought off injuries to their starting pitching staff, with superb hitting and are 32-25 and are just three games back. Toronto has made it clear from the get go, that they will spend money during the season in order to contend.

In the AL Central my 9-1 betting bonanza and that would be the 2005 Chicago White Sox are scuffling a bit after a torrid start and presently trail the Motown Detroit Tigers. The Tigers began the first 50 games under Jim Leyland in spectacular fashion, but injuries are beginning to hit them, with the latest being to Pudge Rodriguez.

At 28-29 the Cleveland Indians will make a move at some point and placing a few bucks on them, could provide you with a nice return on your dollar. The AL West with Texas, Oakland, Seattle and Los Angeles is a crapshoot, with only 5.5 games separating the VIP section and the cheap seats. The first place Rangers incidentally are the only team in the West with a winning mark in games played within the division and against the powerful AL East and you cannot ignore that vital gambling statistic.

The New York Mets like their neighbors the Yankees like to throw the money around and they sit atop the NL East presently, but the Phillies and Braves can almost reach out and touch them. With 14 straight division titles, I certainly would think about a wagering a few bucks on them to win once again.

The Cardinals are suddenly trying to ward off the Cincinnati Reds who are getting healthy and pounding the ball. The Cardinals meanwhile have all kids of injury issues with Pujols and ace Chris Carpenter does not look stable.

Just like their counterparts in the AL West, the NL West Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Padres, Giants and Rockies are in a fierce battle for supremacy. Just six games separate the top and bottom, with Arizona leading the pack. The Dodgers are getting superb play out of Garciaparra and if their veterans can stay healthy, watch out!

If you ‘optimize’ your bet in a simulation using techniques like, optimum f or the Kelly criterion, then your total bankroll will fluctuate more violently than if you size your bets with a simple 1% total bankroll bet. The ‘optimized’ simulation may draw down your account over 30% in some instances while the latter will likely yield much less than that.

The point is this: How will you ‘feel’ about your system after a draw down of 30%? Is it likely that you will continue using the system? Or will your “better judgment” win out as you add this picking system to the picking systems’ scrap heap? I would venture to guess that most bettors would stop betting the system if a large draw down occurred. The problem is that statistically, a system with a positive expectancy will still have large streaks of winners and losers. If you should be so unfortunate as to start utilizing your strategy just before one of those inevitable losing streaks, then you will experience significant destruction of your funds.

The lesson here is to minimize your draw downs to a level where you feel comfortable. That is, use a bet size where if you experience a string of losers, (which you will) then you will still move forward and still gain that statistical advantage called ‘positive expectancy’. If you make your bet size such that each bet has no significant emotional effect, then you are practicing the proper money management. If a bettor can achieve this, then he will know what it is like to have 13 losers in a row in a good system. More importantly, he will be psychologically stable enough to weather the storm and achieve the profits he deserves for having the ability to foresee such occurrences and plan for them accordingly.”

In simple terms, it is important to use a money management system that allows your bet size to be within your comfort level. Using a money management system will help your psychology withstand losing streaks. A bettor should make their bet size in relation to their bankroll small enough that there is no emotional effect on the outcome. This will enable you to stay with a system long enough to see if works.

There are several valid money management systems and some schemes that are not so prudent. Many of these will be discussed in later articles. For now, we will discuss a “percentage of bankroll”. In this system, the player will risk a percentage of his current bankroll. For this discussion, we will use a 2% bankroll ratio for the bet. We like this amount because as explained above must people do not have the discipline or stomach to see large losses. As you can see in the illustration below, we start with a $10,000 bankroll so our first bet will be $200. As our bankroll increases and or decreases so will our bet size. We also make the assumption that we will have a 60% winning probability. Bull Market Sports Handicappers has an average three year winning probability of 64.65% so we will be conservative and use 60% in our illustration. This means that for every 100 bets there will be 60 winners and 40 losers. As you can see in the illustration, one can expect to net $3,493. This makes your total bankroll $13,493 at the end of 100 bets.

We will now compare this to a same size bet system. We will start with the assumption that we will win 60 games with a bet size of $200. This will produce $12,000 in gross winnings. Now take the 40 losers at 220 (don’t forget the vigorish) which yields 8,800 in gross losses. The net profit will be $3,200. This is are not bad but not as good as the percentage of bankroll illustration.

Some people who subscribe to the same size bet system will say it is not a fair comparison. They will say that many of the wagers in the bankroll system are greater than $200. The argument is that if you wager more than $200 you will surely show larger profits.

Let’s look at this argument further. First we take the average of all bets in the illustration. Doing this will produce and average bet size of $205. If you use this bet and multiply this by the 60 winners, we get gross winning in the amount of $12,298. We then do the same for the 40 losers (again do not forget the vigorish) and we get gross losses of $9,019 for a net profit of $3,280. This is better but still falls short of the $3,485 net winnings we experience using the percentage of bankroll system. Another problem with this argument is that it is impossible to determine an average of previous bets because the bet have not yet been made. Since we do not have a crystal ball its impossible to do this.

In order to make money in sports betting, you must look at it as an investment. This separates the successful gambler from the “hard luck” loser. Gambling must be thought of as investment such as the stock market. Sports betting is a grind, do not expect to make a killing overnight. People who bet large amounts either to recoup losses or to make large sums in a short period of time may have a gambling problem. Let’s turn the clock back to April 14, 2006:

AT 18-1 ELLIOT YANIN WILL SHOCK THE WORLD!

Okay I admit I have hit rock bottom as I am about to write an article on American Idol, but on the flip side, you have to admit, this show has power! I have in this competition sat on my couch with my wife who loves the show and in this particular competition have seen the contestants twice. The first time I saw Elliot Yamin sing he was doing a Stevie Wonder tune called ‘If You Really Love Me” and I said then and there that the competition was over.

This guy blew the competition out of the water and even Simon had to admit the guy has the chops. This past week I watched the competition and it was the show with the “Queen “theme and this is not an easy group to imitate. I was stunned they did the voting and he was placed in the bottom three which meant there was a chance he would get eliminated. BS I cried out to my wife, but then it call hit me like a ton of bricks, the guy is short and ugly and the superficial callers, could not get past this issue.

I can’t be the only one to notice that Elliott Yamin has the worst teeth on American Idol. But could his dental dilemma be due to diabetes and not poor hygiene?

But Elliott’s teeth aren’t the only unusual feature on the 27 year-old contestant from Richmond, Virginia. His Abe Lincoln-style sideburns make him look like a cross between an Amish farmer and street gangster. And sometimes he even looks like a leprechaun cautiously coveting his pot of gold.

But seriously, Elliott can use his weirdo/outsider/creepy look to his advantage. Think about it – if his confidence continues to grow (and it should if Simon keeps stroking Elliott’s ego), he could be the unlikely long-shot that is the next American Idol.

American Idol sells the sizzle that anyone can win this competition and what better way then to select a Diabetes sufferer from a poverty stricken family to be the next winner. Believe me folks American Idol will by the show Extreme Makeover and send Yamin there and he will come out looking by Brad Pitt.

I gave you the White Sox, I gave you Mickleson and now you have an 18-1 longshot!

Now I don’t want to come across as some pompous you know what, but this whole American Idol is no different them betting on pro sports. The Phoenix Suns were buried by the public after game 5 of their series against Lakers and everyone was talking about the great Kobe and Phil Jackson for coach of the year.

After game 7 it was all Steve Nash and his posse. The Suns then took apart the Clippers in game one and everyone was talking about all the unsung heroes on the Phoenix team. I warned you that the spread of Suns -4 ½ was too low, but the guys with all the money in Vegas, knew that betting is 90% public perception. The Clippers mauled the Suns last night!

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello gave ESPN said: “Our policy on this issue has been consistent for decades. We have been an active proponent of federal and state legislation that prohibits the spread of legal sports gambling. We do not want our games used as bait”.
